Ignition interlock devices in New York

Under Leandra’s Law, anyone sentenced for DWI in New York since August 2010 gets an interlock — there is no first-offense exemption. The device goes in every vehicle you own or operate, including rented, leased and borrowed ones, and the restriction is added to your record even while your license is revoked. As for how long: normally at least 12 months on a DWI sentence, and required of anyone sentenced since 15 August 2010; you have 10 days after sentencing to fit it.

New York publishes its own figures rather than leaving it all to vendors: up to $200 to fit the device and up to $100 a month while it stays on the car. Removal is billed separately at the end of the term.

A recorded event is not automatically a violation, and that distinction decides most cases. Programs differ in what they count and how they count it: some add time per event, others ignore single events and act on a pattern, and several give you a written escape where a retest within five or ten minutes comes back clean.
