What New York requires
Under Leandra’s Law, anyone sentenced for DWI in New York since August 2010 gets an interlock — there is no first-offense exemption. The device goes in every vehicle you own or operate, including rented, leased and borrowed ones, and the restriction is added to your record even while your license is revoked.
- First offense: Normally at least 12 months on a DWI sentence, and required of anyone sentenced since 15 August 2010; you have 10 days after sentencing to fit it
- Lockout threshold: 0.025% — the court system states the engine will not start at that reading or above; random rolling retests follow, and a refusal sets the horn or alarm going
