What it costs in Ontario
Interlock pricing is set at state level, so what applies in Ontario applies across California. These figures come from the price schedule filed with the state.
California does not cap what a provider may charge. It regulates the other side of the bill: how much of that price falls on you. Providers are required by law to apply this schedule, and to cover the rest themselves.

- The percentages are of the provider’s own standard program cost, which California does not cap. A share of an unregulated number is still an unregulated number.
- Subdivision (k)(1)(G) puts the remainder on the manufacturer, not the state — the provider absorbs whatever the driver does not pay.
- Proof required is one of: last year’s federal tax return, three months of income statements, EDD unemployment verification, or proof of CalFresh.
- Under subdivision (l) the Department of Consumer Affairs may fine a provider up to $1,000 for failing to tell a driver this schedule exists, or for not applying it.
What California requires
California runs a statewide pilot program covering offenses from 1 January 2019 through 31 December 2032. Fit the device and you may drive anytime and anywhere, as long as the vehicle has one. A first offense that involved neither drugs alone nor injury is excluded from the mandate altogether — the requirement starts with injury or a prior conviction.

The count covers fatal crashes where police recorded that a driver had been drinking, which is narrower than the federal 0.08 BAC measure and therefore understates the real figure. San Bernardino County runs at or below the California average — the requirement is set state-wide regardless. What the device changes is measurable too: a car fitted with one cannot be started over the limit, which is why the order attaches to driving privileges rather than to the sentence.

How much does it cost to have an ignition interlock device installed in California?
California does not set the price at all — it sets your share of it. State law fixes how much of the provider's standard cost falls on you, by income, and makes the provider absorb the rest. For the size of that underlying bill the national figures are the reference: NHTSA puts installation at $70 to $90 and monitoring at about $70 a month, roughly $3 to $4 a day. Quotes in Ontario will sit around that unless the provider is charging for something the state does not require.
Can I drink one beer and still start the car in California?
Almost certainly not. California does not print one fixed number in the statute — the level is set by the certifying agency in the device standard, typically between 0.02% and 0.025% BAC, far below the 0.08% driving limit. The device is not testing whether you are impaired, it is testing whether you drank. One drink shortly before a test is enough on most programs, and the fail is recorded whether or not you try again.
What does an ignition interlock device do?
An ignition interlock is a breath-alcohol tester wired into your car ignition. You blow into it before starting the engine; if your breath alcohol is above the state threshold, the engine will not start.
While you are driving, the device asks for rolling retests at random intervals. Every sample, skipped test, and lockout is recorded and sent to the agency monitoring your case.
