DUI classes in Kentucky: a 90-day programme built on the Prime For Life curriculum
Verified · next review
Kentucky calls it the DUI assessment, education and treatment services. It is administered by Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services; completion is reported to the Transportation Cabinet.
Kentucky licenses the facility and certifies the programme, the assessor and the instructor separately, and the fee for education may cover only the costs of delivering the approved twenty-hour Prime For Life curriculum and its participant manuals. A programme may be certified for assessment alone or for assessment and education, but the division will not certify a programme that wants to provide education at every location and nothing else.
Does an online course count in Kentucky?
Not accepted. Kentucky states it plainly: all DUI services must be received in a facility licensed and monitored by the Cabinet, so online courses are not accepted in Kentucky.
Georgia, Kentucky, California and Florida reject online courses outright. Half the searches in this branch carry the word “online”, and that is the single most expensive assumption people make after a conviction.
Where it sits in the process
For a first offender the statute sets the period at ninety days, with the assessment performed at the start of the programme rather than at the end.
That order matters more than the course does. People lose months not because the programme was hard but because they took it at the wrong point, or from a provider the state does not recognise, and had to take it again.
The part of the Kentucky rule that catches people
The assessment is not a formality: it is the Kentucky DUI Assessment Instrument plus a clinical interview, and it decides whether you take the twenty-hour education course or are referred into treatment. Only assessors certified by the division may administer it, and only inside a certified programme.
Why the licence matters more than the price
In California the Department of Health Care Services licenses every DUI program and monitors compliance, and it states plainly that it does not license internet DUI programs — classes offered over the internet do not meet the state requirement. Los Angeles County repeats the warning on its own list: online programs are not licensed and will not be accepted by the DMV for reinstatement of driving privileges.

And the panel is not a class
It is a session where people injured in impaired-driving crashes, or the families of people killed in them, describe what happened to them. There is no test and nothing to pass; attendance is what is recorded. Courts order it alongside education rather than instead of it, and it is usually a single evening rather than a course.
What else has to be satisfied in Kentucky
The programme is one of three or four separate obligations that arrive together. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which runs the interlock program directly runs the interlock side, and a first offence here carries suspension drops from 6 months to 4 if you clear 90 consecutive violation-free days on the device; second offense 18 months down to 12 (120 clean days), third 36 to 18, fourth 60 to 30 None of them substitutes for another, and each is reported separately to the agency that holds your licence.

Questions about Kentucky programmes
Are online DUI classes accepted in Kentucky?
No. Kentucky states it plainly: all DUI services must be received in a facility licensed and monitored by the Cabinet, so online courses are not accepted in Kentucky. A certificate from an online course bought elsewhere does not shorten the process; it just costs money before you start the real one.
How many hours is the DUI class in Kentucky?
A 90-day programme built on the Prime For Life curriculum. Kentucky licenses the facility and certifies the programme, the assessor and the instructor separately, and the fee for education may cover only the costs of delivering the approved twenty-hour Prime For Life curriculum and its participant manuals.
What happens if I do not finish it in Kentucky?
For a first offender the statute sets the period at ninety days, with the assessment performed at the start of the programme rather than at the end. Non-completion is reported rather than ignored, and in most states it is the single most common reason a licence stays suspended long after the court case has ended.
Is the class the same as the ignition interlock in Kentucky?
No. They are separate requirements with separate providers, and the interlock side is run by Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, which runs the interlock program directly. Completing the programme does nothing for the device and the device does nothing for the programme; both usually have to be satisfied before the licence comes back.

Requesting a consultation connects you with an independent attorney or a legal referral service, who decide separately whether to take your case.
